Honest catch: private listening through headphones is a Roku-app feature, so a universal app may not offer it. For that one perk, keep the free Roku app installed alongside. And because iPhones have no infrared, this only works over Wi-Fi — there's no offline mode.

Method 3: The free Google TV app for a TCL Google TV

A TCL Google TV is controlled free by the remote built into the Google TV app, or Google Home. Open the app, sign in with the Google account that's on the TV, tap the remote icon, and pick your set. You get a D-pad, keyboard, and the Assistant mic at no cost.

Catch: T-Cast does not support TCL Roku TVs at all — it's an Android and Google TV app only. If your set is a Roku model, use Method 1 or the universal app instead.

Method 4: The free Fire TV app for a TCL Fire TV

A TCL Fire TV is the odd one out — neither the Roku app nor Google's app touches it. Amazon's free Fire TV app is the phone remote for these sets.
