How to Set the Best Roku TV Picture Settings

Man watching a movie on a TV in a living room

The best Roku TV picture settings start with Movie — or Calibrated if that mode appears — then a backlight that matches the room and extra processing turned off. Open Settings, Display & sound, Picture settings — or Settings, Picture on some builds. Skip Vivid. Fine-tune from a dark living-room scene, not a store demo loop.

On this page

I keep a TCL 43S435 4-Series in the kitchen and a 55S546 5-Series in the living room. Both hide picture controls under Settings, Display & sound, Picture settings. Movie is the mode I leave on after dinner. Honest limit: older firmware may bury the same sliders under Settings, Picture, and I have not clicked every TCL chassis.

The 30-second test: too bright, washed, or soapy?

Watch 30 seconds of a dim indoor scene before you touch a slider. The idle look tells you which method to open first.

  • Neon skin and a store-bright panel. Vivid is still on. Use Method 1.
  • Blacks look gray and faded. Brightness (black level) is too high. Use Method 2.
  • Sports motion looks like cheap video. Motion processing is punching frames. Use Method 3.
  • The room is just too dim or too harsh. Backlight is the lever. Stay in Method 2.

Still inside Netflix or YouTube? Press Home first. Settings will not show Display & sound while an app owns the screen.

Method 1: Pick Movie or Calibrated

Picture mode does more than any one slider. Lock a film-friendly mode before you chase contrast. Movie is the row on both of my TCLs.

  1. 1Press Home so you leave the app you were watching.
  2. 2Open Settings, then Display & sound, then Picture settings. If Display & sound is missing, open Settings, then Picture.
  3. 3Open Picture mode.
  4. 4Choose Movie. Choose Calibrated or Calibrated Dark if those rows appear instead.

Catch: Vivid is the store-floor look. Sports and Game help those jobs when the rows appear — not a movie night. Mode names shift by series and firmware. A TCL Google TV uses a different settings tree; leave this page if the home screen is Google, not Roku. Roku Support is the official place to confirm platform menu labels.

Method 2: Match backlight to the room

Backlight is how bright the panel is. Brightness on this menu is black level. Mix those two up and you crush shadows or wash them out. If the screen is only too bright, the shortcut is in how to turn the brightness down on a Roku TV.

  1. 1Stay in Picture settings after Method 1.
  2. 2Find Backlight, TV brightness, or a similar light control — not the Brightness row.
  3. 3Raise it for a sunny room. Lower it at night until the screen is comfortable.
  4. 4Touch Brightness only if blacks look gray (nudge down) or detail vanishes into black (nudge up).

Catch: I will not publish "set backlight to 40." The scale on the 43S435 is not a promise for your set. HDR can keep its own sliders — redo this while an HDR title is playing. Auto brightness or a power-saver picture option, if you see one, can fight your choice; turn that off before you judge the mode.

Smart TV Remote

Already on the couch and the plastic remote is gone?

Smart TV Remote finds your TCL on the same Wi-Fi so you can tap Picture settings from the phone.

Method 3: Turn off extra processing

Extra processing makes sports look slick and films look cheap. Turn the extras down after the mode and backlight are set. Missing rows mean that feature is not on this build.

  1. 1Open Advanced picture settings if that row exists.
  2. 2Set Dynamic contrast off if you see it.
  3. 3Set Action smoothing, Motion clarity, or a similar motion row off or Low.
  4. 4Set Noise reduction off unless the channel is actually snowy. Ease Sharpness down if edges look outlined.

Catch: do not hunt a service menu I have not confirmed on these TCL sets. Color and tint usually stay near the default. TCL Support has manuals for your series if a label on screen does not match this list.

Method 4: Change picture settings from your phone

A phone on the same Wi-Fi can open the same Settings path when the clicker is missing. Smart TV Remote finds a compatible TCL on the network, then you steer with the on-screen D-pad, OK, Back, and Home. The official Roku app can do the same after a free account sign-in.

  1. 1Get Smart TV Remote free on iPhone or iPad (iOS 16.0 or later).
  2. 2Join the exact same home Wi-Fi as the TV. The app talks over that network, not infrared.
  3. 3Open the app and let it scan. Tap your TCL in the list — no pairing code.
  4. 4Press Home on the on-screen remote, then finish Method 1 through Method 3 in Picture settings.

Catch: the TV must be on and on that Wi-Fi. A set that is unplugged cannot be woken from a phone. Guest networks and split 2.4 / 5 GHz names block the scan. Which picture setting does what?

Use the row that matches the job. Each path starts from Home so you are not stuck inside an app.

JobWhereWhat you get
Nightly films and showsPicture mode → Movie or CalibratedA film-friendly start; skip Vivid
Room too bright or too dimBacklight / TV brightnessPanel light for this room, not black level
Gray or crushed blacksBrightness rowBlack level only — tiny nudges
Soap-opera motionAdvanced picture, motion rowsOff or Low if the row appears

My pick on the 55S546: Movie, a lower backlight after dark, motion processing off. The 43S435 in the kitchen stays a notch brighter — lunch glare wins there. Need the Roku app paired first? See the TCL Roku TV remote app guide. A universal walkthrough lives in the TCL TV remote app guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Roku TV picture settings?

The best Roku TV picture settings start in Movie, or Calibrated if that mode appears, with backlight matched to the room and extra processing off. Open Settings, Display & sound, Picture settings — or Settings, Picture on some builds. Skip Vivid for nightly watching. Change HDR while an HDR title is playing, because those sliders can sit apart from SDR. Exact rows differ by TCL series, so lock the mode first, then nudge backlight.

How do I change picture settings on a Roku TV?

Press Home, then open Settings, Display & sound, Picture settings. Some builds put the same controls under Settings, Picture. Pick a picture mode, then edit backlight and any advanced options from that list. Leave the streaming app first or Settings may hide Display & sound. A phone D-pad works if the plastic remote is gone.

Should I use Vivid or Movie on my Roku TV?

Use Movie, or Calibrated if your list shows it. Skip Vivid for daily watching. Vivid boosts color and light for a bright store wall. Movie is the closer-to-film starting point on the TCL 43S435 and 55S546 I use. Sports and Game help those jobs when the rows appear; they are not the nightly default.

What is the difference between brightness and backlight on a Roku TV?

Backlight, or a similarly named light control, sets how bright the panel is. Brightness on these menus is black level — how dark the darkest parts look. Raise backlight for a sunny room. Leave brightness near the default unless blacks look gray or sink into a blob. I will not publish a fake slider number that your set does not use.

How do I reset Roku TV picture settings?

Open Picture settings and look for a Reset row on that list. Confirm if the TV asks. Reset returns that input to the factory picture mode and sliders. The step does not factory-reset the whole Roku. If Reset is missing, switch the picture mode to Standard, then back to Movie, and redo backlight by hand.

Can I change Roku TV picture settings without the remote?

Yes. Put the phone on the same Wi-Fi as the TV, open Smart TV Remote, tap the set in the scan list, then use D-pad and OK to open Settings and Picture settings. The official Roku app can steer the same menus after a free account sign-in. The TV must be on and joined to that network.

Need the Picture menu without the clicker?

Smart TV Remote finds your TCL on Wi-Fi and puts a D-pad on your phone — free, no account.
