AirPlay Not Working on Roku? How to Fix It

I AirPlay to a Roku Streaming Stick 4K and a TCL 4-Series Roku TV from an iPhone 14 and a MacBook Air. When it breaks, it's almost never the hardware. Most often it's one of three things: AirPlay got switched off, the two devices sat on different networks, or the Roku needed a software update. My honest take — the guest Wi-Fi trap catches everyone at least once.

AirPlay is Apple's built-in way to send a video, a photo, or your whole screen to a TV. Roku supports it, but a lot of small things can stop it cold. Work the fixes below in order. Each one takes under two minutes, and the first three solve most cases.

The 30-second test

Match your exact symptom before you dig through menus. The failure you see points to the fix you need.

Fix 1: Turn AirPlay back on in the Roku's settings

Start here, because a switched-off AirPlay is the single most common cause. If your Roku doesn't appear in the AirPlay list at all, the setting is probably off. It can flip off after a software update or a factory reset.

1. 1On the Roku, press Home and open Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit.
2. 2Set AirPlay to On. Leave it on — it stays on for every Apple device in the house.
3. 3While you're there, set Require Code to First time only, so you type the 4-digit passcode once instead of at every connect.

No "Apple AirPlay and HomeKit" entry in Settings? Your Roku either needs a software update or is too old for AirPlay — jump to Fix 3. Fix 2: Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi

AirPlay only finds the Roku when both devices share one network. This is the fix when it worked yesterday but not today — a phone that hopped to a guest network or a work VPN is the usual reason.

1. 1On the iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Wi-Fi and note the network name. On a Mac, click the Wi-Fi menu.
2. 2On the Roku, open Settings > Network > About and check the network matches.
3. 3Turn off any VPN on the Apple device. A VPN hides the Roku from AirPlay every time.

One catch: a guest network won't work, even if it's the same router. Guest modes isolate devices from each other on purpose. A 2.4GHz and a 5GHz band on the same router do talk to each other, so those are fine to mix.

Fix 3: Update the Roku software

AirPlay 2 needs a recent Roku OS. If the AirPlay menu is missing or greyed out, an update usually brings it back. Some models need a higher version than others.

2. 2Confirm your model qualifies: open Settings > System > About. AirPlay 2 needs Roku OS 9.4 or later on most devices.
3. 3A few models need Roku OS 10.0 or later — Roku TVs numbered 5xxx or 6xxx, Roku Express 3700, Express+ 3710, and Roku 4 (model 440). Very old players below these versions never get AirPlay at all.

Roku's official list of AirPlay models and OS versions is on its support site. If your set predates OS 9.4 and can't update, no fix adds AirPlay — cast from inside an app instead, or use the Roku mobile app's own casting.

Fix 4: Reset the AirPlay passcode

Sometimes AirPlay finds the Roku, but the 4-digit code never shows, or you get stuck in a code loop. That's a stale pairing. Clearing it and reconnecting fixes the handshake.

1. 1On the Roku, open Settings > Apple AirPlay and HomeKit > Require Code.
2. 2Set it to Every time, try one connection so a fresh code shows on the TV, then set it back to First time only.
3. 3Still no code? Restart the Roku (Fix 5), then on the iPhone tap Screen Mirroring in Control Center and pick the Roku again.

The passcode shows on the TV screen, not on your phone — look at the television, not the device. If the TV is on the wrong input, you'll never see it, so switch to the Roku's input first.

Fix 5: Restart the Roku, router, and device

When AirPlay connects and then drops, stutters, or shows a black screen, a clean restart clears most of it. Weak Wi-Fi and stale sessions are the usual culprits, not broken parts.

1. 1Restart the Roku: Settings > System > Power > System restart. A full power-cycle — unplug for 30 seconds — clears more.
2. 2Restart your router, then the iPhone or Mac. Move both devices closer to the router, or switch them to the 5GHz band for a steadier stream.
3. 3Turn on Fast TV start under Settings > System > Power, so the Roku keeps its network alive when it's off and AirPlay can wake it.

One thing that isn't a fault: mirroring a paid app like Netflix or Disney+ often gives sound but a black picture. That's copy protection.
